EcoFluxx Lesson Plan
Grades 5-8

This lesson works well in the middle of any ecology unit.

Objectives: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to describe examples of predator/prey relationships in nature explain how some animals protect themselves from predation better follow all directions presented to them become more flexible, adaptable and literate learners.

Pre-test: A pre-test is found at the end of this document. You can use this as a standard pre-test, a worksheet during the lesson or as a preparatory set discussion page.

Lesson/play: Show the students how to play the game and allow time to play at least a few games. This step will be different for each teacher – do what works best in your classroom:

  • Show the 4 different types of cards and explain briefly how each works. You can use the "Card Types" page found later in this document as a handout or for overhead use.
  • Play an example game with the students closest to the front – but have all the cards face up so you can show them how to play various cards. Have the rest of the students gather around to see how this works<
  • Just toss out the decks and say “the rules are in there – I’ll be around to help” and let them figure it out. This game is all about following directions – let them follow the directions on their own.
  • Divide your class into groups of around 4 each – Eco Fluxx works well with 4 or 5 players, not so well with 2 or 3. It’s better to make fewer slightly larger groups than more smaller ones.
  • Let the students play for 15-20 min. A full game can be over in 5 min or take as long as 50 minutes. Good luck

    Discussion:

    Take a few minutes to discuss the game play time with your students. Suggested topics for discussion or journaling include:
  • What went well? What didn’t go so well?
  • Did you find it hard to follow the ever-changing rules?
  • How well does this mirror what goes on in the “real world”?
  • If you had a blank card, what would you do with it? (you can make this an assignment and hand out real Fluxx Blanxx for them to create!)

    Post-Test

    Re-do the pre-test again and show concrete learning increases, or give the Post Test found later in this document.

    Card Types

    KEEPERS (Green):

  • When you play a Keeper, place it face up on the table in front of you. This counts as 1 play.
  • There’s all sorts of keepers: bears, fish, dirt, frogs, leaves, air… what do they all have in common?
  • There’s one special keeper: Poison. It protects your keepers from being eaten. This simulates in the game how animals use natural defenses like being poisonous to other animals.
  • What are some examples in nature that you know? What are some adaptations that other animals have made to deal with it?

    NEW RULES (Yellow):

  • When you play a New Rule, place it face up in the center of the table. It goes into effect immediately. Discard any previous conflicting Rule. This is where FLUXX really gets its name – things are always in Fluxx (what does Fluxx mean?)
  • When you play a New Rule, you only discard a matching Rule. For example, if you play a Draw 2 card, it replaces any Draw card out there – but does not replace a Play card, Limit card or any other New Rule.
  • Remember, the New Rule goes into effect right when you play it. So, if the Rules are “Draw 1, Play 1” and you play a Draw 3 card, you need to immediately draw two more cards!
  • Same with the Play rules – just look at the rules currently on the table – have you followed them all during your turn? No? Then your turn isn’t over yet.
  • Yes, if the rule is “Play All” you may have to play a card that makes someone else win!

    GOALS (Pink):

  • When you play a Goal, place it face up on the table in front of you. This counts as 1 play.
  • There’s no way to win until someone plays a Goal.
  • Goals are often like the one to the right– you have to have two keepers (here, Snakes and Sunshine) on the table face up in front of you to win.
  • In EcoFluxx, there’s another type of goal: "Eats Goals." If you have one keeper (like Spiders) and the other (like Insects) is anywhere on the table, you win when the goal "Spiders Eat Insects" is on the table.
  • Basically, just follow what the card says – the player who satisfies the conditions listed on the goal wins as soon as the conditions are met – immediately.

    ACTIONS (Blue):

  • When you play an Action, read out loud what it says on the card and do each step as you read it.
  • Some actions will tell you to set your hand aside, some will tell you to gather up everyone’s cards… whatever it says to do, just do.
  • When you play an action card, sometimes you let someone else win the game – that happens. Enjoy their win and gather up the cards and play again!
  • The most important thing to remember with all Fluxx cards is: just READ the card all the way to the bottom of the card and do ALL of what it say. Follow the directions and you’ll be fine.

    EcoFluxx Pre-Test

    1. What is the definition of a predator?
    Give one example:

    3. Name 3 things that aren’t alive that are part of the environment.

    4. What is a food chain?
    Give an example:

    5. What is composting?
    Why is this good for the environment?

    EcoFluxx Post-Test

    1. Explain what this statement means: predators compete for food.

    2. Why is poison good for some animals?

    3. What is a migration?
    How is migration different from a population crash?

    4. What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?

    5. What is pollution?
    How does pollution affect the environment?
